A Fine History Continued

Fine Roots

Stadsvilla Mozaic on Laan Copes van Cattenburch brings with it a remarkable story. The street was laid out in 1870 and named after Lodewijk Constantijn Rabo Copes van Cattenburch. In 1824, he was appointed as the sole ruling mayor of The Hague by King Willem I. Mr. Copes invested heavily in the city's growth. He believed the city air was unhealthy for its residents and took action. In 1825, he started the construction of a canal between Scheveningen and the city center. This canal was also meant to refresh the city's water supply. The ultimate goal was never achieved, and the canal never progressed beyond Seinpostduin. However, the fishermen from Scheveningen could use the new connection to deliver their fish to the city.

Back in Time

The building dates from 1882 and has a rich history. Did you know that in 1890, the director of Siemens moved into the property? He was the first person in the area to own a real car. The building was also owned by the Internal Security Service. In the 1950s and 1960s, training for senior education was held there, led by Cees van den Heuvel. Later, it became an old age home, and around 1975, it became Hotel Cattenburch. In 1995, it was combined with the adjacent building at number 38.

Corina Waaijer had dreamed of opening her own hotel since she was a child. The only way to make this dream come true was to simply do it. While on vacation in Asia, Corina sat in a small restaurant thinking about how she could achieve her dream. This restaurant was called 'Mozaic,' and the name for the hotel was born. "For me, this moment during my vacation in Asia symbolizes my decision to pursue my ideal and leave my permanent job behind. 'Mozaic' means colorful, variation, diversity, and at the same time unity."

From Dream to Reality

The dream became a reality when Corina received the key to the beautiful nostalgic building on December 31, 2007, after taking over from the previous owner. The renovation could begin.

“We kept the façade and the overall appearance of the building intact and tried to enhance it. The interior had already been extensively renovated when we bought it. Therefore, we initially focused on safety and aesthetics, such as straight hallways, a clear and cozy layout, modern fireproofing, and of course, a beautiful interior.”

An accident is always just around the corner, as was evident during the renovation when our Facility Services employee hit his head with a beam. He went to the Albert Heijn on Bankastraat to get an ice pack to cool the bruise. In the absence of ice, the supermarket manager gave him a bag of frozen peas for free to hold against his head.

After nearly a year of hard work, on December 12, 2008, Corina's first hotel was officially opened by Frits Huffnagel. Her dream had come true.
